So, it's a couple of weeks since my last update and a lot has happened since then! Firstly, much like Lucius, I've been a very naughty boy indeed. However, rather than attempting to destablise the noble and just Guild's control of our fair city I have bought my purchases for the next few months as I am about to move house and thus that would be quite likely to curb my spending for a bit. So, what have I recruited to the cause I hear you ask...?
Well, firstly I won a set of the new Wardens on EBay (god bless those generous sorts who order in the sales then flog their stuff on... especially when I shockingly get a bargain out of it!!) which should be £12-£13 from my budget on the local store's prices. Secondly I decided to purchase the Starter Set with Ben, giving him the Neverborn (I'm so generous... he does have Zorida so at least he *might* get use out of them!) to give me more options. I have visions of Grimwell returning to his office, slightly blood-splattered, scribbling in his notebook as he walks, to find Lucius sitting at his desk reading his research journals, looking up and stating 'so, doctor... About that research grant I signed off on for you' before commandeering the lot of them for a few 'jobs'. That's another £18 out of the budget, so I've spent £68-£69 so far. I bought a set of the Through the Breach models which allowed me a guild riflewoman which looks more like a guard then the models do. I will likely pick up the actual rifles when I can but I fancied trying one out. It'll also allow me to make a convict gunslinger which could be quite cool as well (and a desperate merc which will not be getting used!).
I finished painting Lucius as well. I'm really pleased with him, especially the base with the 'Killer at Large' poster floating down the sewer. I used the Skavenblight Dirge, Stormvermin Fur and Dawnstone on the trousers and brickwork, the sewage is Caliban Green, with a Biel-Tan wash, then Stegadon Scale, then Loren Forest. The mask and toe-caps are Runelord Brass with a Biel-Tan wash, Auric Gold then Runefang Steel. The black is Abaddon Black, Nuln Oil, dark Reaper then the darker of the blue base paints (Kantor blue?). Sadly my photography is dire, so you have to take my work for it that it looks really nice as my attached pictures are so poor! There is a bloodied handprint on the wanted poster as well.
I intend to paint the Lawyers and Scribe with the same reddish coat as Lucius, and possibly the Guards as well. I saw a Sonia Criid on A Wyrd Place that someone had done a red coat on and I was sold on that so I think my whole Guild will have it as their spot colour.
I've also played three games since my last post; two against Ben's Colette crew and one against my friend Ian's Perdita crew. I beat Ben 7-6 the first game which was another Extraction mission with Frame For Murder (knocked a Guard's health down with Devil's Deal then fed him to Cassandra and a Corphyee-which sadly killed him denying me full VPs) and Hunting Party (Peacekeeper went mental and ate everything in range, Dashel died nastily :( ). That game was really tough as I was 6-0 up and then lost it all, including Lucius and only had the Peacekeeper left and watched helplessly as Ben racked up the VPs. I made some schoolboy errors including a failed assassination on Colette who had no scheme markers or showgirls to Defensive Trigger into where I attacked the Corphyee then realised that I now didn't have the AP to do what I needed to.
Against Ian I won 9-2 with Convict Labour and Breakthrough, leaving him with only Perdita. Ian is new to Malifaux and wasn't prepared for a lot of the tricks I was pulling out. I tried Grimwell and co in that game as well as the Warden (ditching my Guard, Peacekeeper and Dashel) and they did pretty well; Unimpeded is fantastci, but I made a lot of daft errors including moving Grimwell into the open to charge Perdita when he could've done it from cover which resulted in him taking Red Joker damage on the way in. The Warden was awesome, paralysing Santiago and Ian's Ronin(...) which stopped him reoving my scheme markers. I made really good use of my Lawyers, baiting Ian into killing them in the last turn so that they could drop scheme markers with Finish The Job in order to complete my VP haul.
The final game against Ben was a defeat :( It was Interference and he locked down my entire crew with two doves, preventing me from scoring in the crucial turn. I took Public Demonstration and boxed in Cassandra for 3 VP, but I'd taken Exhaust Their Forces and scored a solitary point from it so lost 6-4. I'd decided to go dual-hench on him; taking Dashel and Grimwell, but Grimwell shockingly underperformed (although on BOTh lobotomy attempts Ben Red Joker'd the defense flips, so there;'s not much I can do about that I feel). The Orderlies are fantastic, allowing me to Devil's Deal with reckless abandon, but the Warden with Lawyer beside it is simply fishing for Black Jokers for Highest Authority as I paralysed it two turns in a row then had to use Lucius's AP to drag it up the table. Exhaust Their Forces doesn't work as well as hoped against as the only things Colette I could generally exhaust required 2 AP to do so, and had pushed away forcing me to move up to them in order to be in range. My guild rifle died in turn 1 after hammering a Corphyee ; he made a duet and fired 'it' into my poor girl, one-shotting her.
So in summary the crew is performing a lot better now. I'm over the initial disillusionment and really enjoying playing and painting them. I still don't think Dashel is much use but until I get Ryle I'll keep using him/drop him for Grimwell in certain games. I gave Grimwell Expert Sleuth which was pretty good, giving him huge movement.
Until next time, stay out of the sewers...
